A kitchen sink gets more use than any other fitting in the house: washing up for the family, soaking pots after a dawat, washing vegetables and filling water. Getting the size and the tap right matters more than the looks. These are our current prices for sinks, kitchen taps and their fittings:

|---|---|
| Connection pipes | Rs.450 |
| Adjustable Rotating Water Saving Faucet | Rs.850 |
| Flexible Sink Neck (Spray Spout) | Rs.1,200 |
| Sink Cock Lever | Rs.2,500 |
| Hot Water Tap | Rs.6,500 |
| Multifunctional Piano Kitchen Sink Bowl | Black | Rs.32,000 |
Measure before you buy
- The counter cut-out: an inset sink drops into a hole cut in the counter, and its rim must cover the hole with room to seal. Measure the hole, or the space for a new one, against the sink's size.
- The cabinet below: the bowl and drain must fit inside it, with room for the trap and pipes.
- Depth: a deeper bowl splashes less and takes big pots; a very deep one means more bending.
- The water point: a wall tap needs a point on the wall above the sink; a deck tap needs a hole in the sink or counter and a supply below.
Our multifunction kitchen sink is listed at about 75 × 46 cm in its photos.
Stainless steel: what 304 means
Most kitchen sinks are stainless steel. "304", also written SUS 304 or 18/8, is a common grade with about 18% chromium and 8% nickel, which resists rust and staining in normal kitchen use. Thicker steel dents less and is quieter when water hits it, so ask the grade and thickness of any sink you're comparing.
Choosing the tap
- Wall-mounted sink cock: fixed to the wall above the sink and fed from a wall point. Common in Pakistani kitchens.
- Deck-mounted (pillar) tap: stands on the sink or counter, fed by a connection pipe from below.
- Swan-neck spout: a tall curved spout leaves room under it to fill big pots. Our lever sink cock has one.
- Flexible or pull-out spout: lets you aim the water at a pot or the corner of the sink. A flexible spout can replace the fixed spout on taps that take one.
- Rotating spray head: spreads the flow so it splashes less. Our rotating water-saving faucet fits tap outlets of about 16 to 19 mm, according to its listing.

Hot water at the sink
Without a geyser line to the kitchen, an electric instant hot water tap heats the water as it flows. It needs an earthed socket near the sink rated for its power, ideally on a circuit with an earth-leakage breaker (RCD).
The drain: waste and trap
Under the sink, the waste (the drain fitting) connects to a trap, a bend that holds a little water to keep sewer smells out of the kitchen, and then to the drain pipe.
- The kitchen smells: the trap may have dried out, or it's leaking or loose.
- The sink drains slowly: grease is the usual cause. Wipe greasy pans before washing, and never pour cooking oil down the drain.
Connecting a deck tap
A deck tap connects to the wall point with a flexible connection pipe through an angle valve, so the tap can be shut off on its own. Measure from the wall point to the tap's inlet and choose a pipe a little longer.
